Research Project

“ConTraX AI: AI-Assisted Gap Filling in International Arbitration”

Ian’s doctoral project explores the integration of artificial intelligence (in specific Large Language Model) into the interpretation and supplementation of contractual gaps in international arbitration. The research aims to develop a conceptual and technological framework that enhances arbitral efficiency and consistency while preserving human judgment and procedural fairness.

The project examines how AI-driven tools can assist arbitrators in identifying, contextualizing, and resolving interpretative challenges (such as contractual ambiguities and gaps, inconsistency detection, and context-sensitive reasoning), without undermining consent, party autonomy, confidentiality or the interpretative integrity of arbitral reasoning. Drawing from comparative law, machine learning ethics, and legal hermeneutics, Ian’s work looks forward to contribute to the emerging field of Computational Legal Reasoning promoting the responsible and ethical use of technology to strengthen justice and arbitration.
